How did the polio vaccine administered
in congo contaminated with hiv?The particular vaccine administered in
congo went by the name CH-AT, which some experts say stands
for "chimpazee-attenuated ".A manager of one of the early polio
virus laboratories conceded that the polio vaccine fed to people
in th 1950s was not sufficiently attenuated based on modern safety
tests .Therefore after the polio vaccine was cultured by passage
through chimpazee kidney tissue allowed to multiply and harvested again, some
of it became contaminated by chimpazee SIV-which is the closest primate
relative to HIV-1.Unfortunately, the vaccine technology at the time
could not detect the contamination.Soon after this contaminated vaccine was
inoculated into mor than three thousand people in Congo ( including bodering
areas of modern day Rwanda and Burundi),the harmless SIV in the
chimpazee became the fatal HIV in the people who received the
vaccine .Consequently, manyof those who received that particular polio
vaccination in Congo became HIV-1 postive;hence Congo has the eariest
specimen of HIV in existence .How then did the disease spread
so rapidly to the rest of Africa.
The Congolese who became infected with
HIV-1 through the polio vaccine, inevitably the sexual active ones,
began to spread the virus to others .As early as 1976 about
one percent of blood samples taken in Congo was already HIV
postive .Four years later, 3% of 498 deep frozen blood samplesof apparently
healthy Congolese mothers also tested positive .The infected mothers
were from Congolese capital ,Kinshasha , One of the ost bustling
East African cities . With so much commerce and interaction among
such major cities of East Africa ,the virus percolated outward
from its central African source (Belgian Congo ) towards neighbouring
countries like Uganda. The spread of the virus was initially through
isolated cases of sexual transmission.However ,one particular factor resulted
in the epidemic spread of the disease: war .This factor was so
potent in the spread of HIV/AIDS , such that the first major
AIDS epidemic did not appeaer in congo Where the disease was
born.
